Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
