EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the holiday period, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
