Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several approach shafts down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," he added. "Including them were numerous UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it termed a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
